I am a fabulous crafter, but a very basic baker, at best. The kitchen is not my favorite room in house, unless I’m in there to decorate. It’s a fact that’s not usually a big problem, I mean, let’s face it, there are plenty of great bakeries to choose from in our neck of the woods.

However, when it comes to the holidays, especially Valentine’s Day, I do enjoy presenting my family with a little bit of homemade love, something special, and store bought just won’t do.

Luckily, I am a very good cheater when it comes to DIY. I’m always looking for a bargain and the easy way to elegant. Baking is no exception and my powdered sugar heart cupcakes are a perfect example.

I started by whipping up a batch of chocolate cupcakes. I used a basic cake recipe, but a box mix will do, too. To set the holiday tone, I baked them in festive Valentine paper liners. They're available at craft and grocery stores at this time of the year for less than two bucks. They come in patterns and solid reds and pinks.

Dressed for the occasion, my cupcakes already looked pretty good when they come out of the oven, but I was only half way there. I didn’t want to leave the tops unadorned. I mean what's Valentine's Day without a few hearts?

Now, like I said, I am not a great baker, so fondant or glaze or even homemade icing were all way out of my wheelhouse. But powdered sugar? Even I could handle that.

I wanted to add a simple heart to each cupcake, but I didn't have a heart stencil on hand. No problem, I simply made one out of an index card. I just cut out my heart, placed it over my cupcake and sprinkled the powdered sugar on with a flour sifter. I frankly couldn't believe I owned one, but there it was in the cabinet. It made the process super simple and my cupcakes were super stunning. Everybody loved them. And what could be better than that on Valentine’s Day?
