Gardening Tips

Now that the growing season is fully underway, two of the most critical components of cultivating a successful home garden is: nutrition and pest management. There are many organic and natural options to promote healthy plant growth and flower/fruit production that are safe to use around adults, children and pets. Avoiding pesticides means that beneficial bacteria, worms, and other soil inhabitants thrive.
To ensure adequate plant hydration and preserve water resources, water in the morning, when it’s cooler; this way less water will be lost to evaporation. Watering in the evening leaves the plants wet overnight, which may promote fungus or mold growth. For most efficient watering, use a soaker hose to aim water at the roots.
Proper watering will support nutrient uptake. If you plant your garden in the same place year after year, it is likely that the soil will require supplemental fertilizing. Organic forms of fertilizer include pulverized oyster shells, manure, and compost. A well-balanced garden will only require one or two fertilizations each season, less if the garden soil is supplemented with rich compost. Many agricultural extension offices and universities with agriculture programs offer soil testing for pH and essential nutrients at no cost; there are also home testing kits available for purchase online.
To keep garden pests at bay, grow a variety of plants to limit the offerings for plant-specific problematic bugs, which will make the garden overall less attractive to them. Natural predators such as frogs, birds, and bats should be encouraged to help keep pests under control.
Chicken wire installed flush with the ground and secured with garden staples will keep out larger pests such as rabbits, which love young green sprouts and tender new leaves. Be sure to seal off any gaps beneath fencing or between sections of your garden with logs or other solid materials that will not harm any curious creatures but will ensure they stay out. Sprays and oils that contain scents such as cinnamon, peppermint, and garlic are especially effective at deterring squirrels, chipmunks, and rabbits. These smells are pleasant to humans and harmless to animals. Be sure to reapply after heavy rains to maintain effectiveness.
With a bit of planning and maintenance, you can be assured that your garden will be healthy and prolific all season long.

Mother’s Day Gift Guide

Mother’s Day is fast approaching and, while it will be different due to the pandemic, the day will be, as it always has been, a chance to honor the mom(s) in your life and give gifts that show how much these special women mean to you. Whether the day involves brunch, dinner out, time in the yard, or participating in a favorite outdoor activity, showing an abundance of love to your mom and the special women in your life is a must. This year, as families start coming together once again, there will be a special emphasis on this all important day. Bouquets of flowers, a Mother’s Day mainstay, are guaranteed to bring a smile. However, there are other options that may show how well you know her and her taste. Why not consider something new – beyond the roses, tulips, or mixed bouquet you traditionally give the mom(s) in your life?
After months of being cooped up at home, the beautiful spring weather may be a perfect time for an outdoor picnic. You can build a picnic basket with gingham napkins, wine glasses (a bottle of her favorite wine), and all of the accoutrements for a lovely day in the park. Harry & David’s & Country Living’s Let’s Have a Picnic Gift Basket is great because it comes with cheeses, meats, a cake, and more – nearly everything you need beautifully packaged in a picnic basket.
As she heads outside, she will find it is time to shed a winter coat. It may still be chilly at night when going for a walk, so why not have her feel cozy and look stylish in a beautiful spring pashmina. Handmade by MiaKraftsShop on etsy.com, it’s trendy and for an added bonus, you’ll be supporting a small business.
For those who have been stuck at home, the good weather brings lots of opportunities for moms devoted to fitness to get outside. A new pair of sneakers or yoga mat with a great insulated water bottle to keep her water ice cold is the perfect gift which she will get plenty of use from.
If the lady in your life loves jewelry, you can get a gift that will pull on her heartstrings. Eve’s Addiction has created the Custom Interlocking Hearts Birthstone Locket in silver, gold tone and rose gold tone that will allow her to carry her loves close to her heart, both literally and figuratively. What could be better than that? Evesaddiction.com (Photo courtesy of Eve’s Addiction)
If your special mom needs some down time after this crazy year, consider gifts to center her. A certificate to a spa for an afternoon of her-time may be just what she needs. Or, how about a subscription for a monthly box of calm? (thecalmbox.com). Each month will bring her treats to enhance her wellness and mindfulness. If she needs a quiet place with a good book, try a subscription to Just the Right Book (justtherightbook.com) or Audible (audible.com). Your thoughtfulness with these options will not go unnoticed!
Subscriptions let you get creative. You need to simply consider what she may like – from skin care or fashion to wine or cooking – (there is even a box for Disney lovers) – just research your options. Not only do they allow you to stay within your desired budget and time frame, but in some cases, enable you to choose the size of the box. The choices are limitless; think of her interests and look up all that is available.
For those who know that your special mom truly looks forward to receiving flowers, consider a new twist on this longstanding favorite. 1-800-Flowers.com has preserved roses in a box, complete with a bow. Mom will be able to admire her flowers for months to come with this lovely gift. Or, if planting her flowers is a shared activity for Mother’s Day, how about a gardening tote with gloves, tools, and seeds. Harry & David has an herb garden in a wooden box if she’d rather keep her plantings in a nearby window.
If your special mom hasn’t traveled in more than a year due to the pandemic, you may want to look at a night or two in a hotel – a getaway can do wonders for the mind. If you need not get on a plane; within driving distance there are loads of places from which to choose. Perhaps she has mentioned a location that she has always wanted to visit. A weekend in a hotel or a bed and breakfast will be a gift she will always remember.
Keep in mind, it’s not about the price tag; beautiful, meaningful gifts can be found to fit every budget. Consider the taste, interests, and personal style of the lovely lady for whom you are shopping for. If you can picture her delight, you’ve made the right choice.
However you choose to celebrate this special day, make it memorable and keep her in your heart and mind all year long. Remember, Mother’s Day may come once a year, but she loves you completely every day!

Your Spring Wellness Guide

For me, mental health is the prime factor in regaining balance in our lives from the stress of the past year which we’ve all experienced. Here are a few simple ways to find comfort, boost your immunity, and support your mental health to regain physical and mental balance.

Mental health. For those of you who experience “monkey mind,” the best antidote is to take time to meditate or to do breath work. “Calm” is the #1 App for mediation, relaxation, and sleep. It also provides video lessons on mindful movement and gentle stretching. “Wellness travel” is another trend with the idea that you travel slower, nearer, and mindfully. Now that most people have been vaccinated, it’s time to travel back to visit with friends and family we’ve missed this past year. There is nothing more soothing than a hug or smile from a loved one. I am also a firm believer in taking daily walks, which gives my mind and body a boost. We recently hiked the north entrance to Blydenburgh Park off of New Mill Road in Smithtown. Once a farm-to-mill market, you can hike around Blydenburgh Lake or Stump Pond Loop for approximately 6 miles. Historic buildings mark the site and it’s part of the Long Island Greenbelt Trail.

Comfort. Since many people are opting to work from home, “althleisure wear” is continuing in its popularity. At Marshall’s, for example, they have a large selection of comfortable outfits already lined up on the racks for women, men, and children. If you are dressing up for date night, it’s a good time to put on jewelry, makeup, and something that’s attractive, yet still comfortable. Unfortunately, we can’t always give in to our more laid-back side.

Immunity. To increase and strengthen immunity it is suggested to take antioxidants such as vitamin E, krill oil, astaxanthin, and vitamin C, which neutralize free radicals in the body (mercolamarket.com). Sign up for a free e-book as well as Dr. Mercola’s health newsletter at mercola.com. The benefits of eating a plant-based diet can help to lower blood pressure, improve your cholesterol, keep your brain strong, minimize the risk of stroke, decrease the risk of cancer, ward off diabetes and help you lose weight. For optimal physical and mental wellness this spring, be mindful to wear a mask when necessary, wash your hands, maintain social distance where appropriate, get vaccinated, and go outside for some good old vitamin D from the sun. Lastly, don’t forget to plant some flowers! Happy and Healthy Spring to all!

Mommy’s…Mozzarella En Carrozza

It’s Mother’s Day! This year it really deserves extra honor and celebration, especially when mother’s around the world have worn so many “hats” during the pandemic. Your mother was your teacher, zoom coach, nurse, psychologist, meal planner, chef, housekeeper, friend and playmate! She did it all, while perhaps working full time and keeping everyone happy and safe! Let’s celebrate the mother’s and those who nurture us with love and devotion! My mother never wanted a lot of presents, or for us to make a big fuss over Mother’s Day. She always loved the times we had spent with her and the easy preparation of her favorite Italian fried cheese sandwich—which brings back loving memories of her own mother. My mother absolutely loved mozzarella any which way…especially Mozzarella En Carrozza. Popular in southern Italian cuisine, this recipe is essentially a mozzarella stick in sandwich form. With its molten mozzarella cheese center, it is tucked inside crusted bread, dredged in bread crumbs and fried. The perfect combination of flavor, the only thing better…is that you made it for her! Simple to prepare, it is delicious as an appetizer or a quick meal.   For my family this specialty withstood the test of time because of its simplicity and mouthwatering taste. I would just love hearing my mother say after her last bite…“OH, Mommy that was so GOOD!” To better understand:  My mother called all her children “Mommy” as babies and well into older adulthood (in her eyes we were never too old). This I learned was an Italian tradition, and I discovered it is cultural in many parts around the globe. A term of endearment, always said with love and affection. Nothing comes close to the love of a mom, nothing as sweet! Happy Mother’s Day mommy!  Honoring all the mom’s and those with special mother-like bonds who contribute to your well-being and hold you together! XOXO, Denise
4 slices bread (Italian, white or any bread of your choice)
   with crusts trimmed
1 ball fresh Mozzarella cheese
1 T fresh minced parsley
1 T fresh minced basil
Salt and pepper
Olive oil and a tab of butter for frying
2-3 eggs beaten
1 cup plain or flavored bread crumbs
Prepared warm marinara sauce (optional for dipping)
Cut bread into slices. Cut cheese into 1/4 inch slices, pressing the top and bottom of the sandwich down with cheese inside. Whisk together eggs, parsley, salt and pepper. Dip into eggs and then into bread crumbs on both sides. In a large skillet over medium heat, oil and butter the sandwich, then fry on both sides (until your desired crispiness and all cheese has melted). Cut in ½ and serve hot with a side of marinara sauce for dipping. P.S. This recipe is printed in my dear Grandmother’s Cook Book. xoxo

Mother’s Day BRUNCH

Every year as Mother’s Day approaches, I feel the impending doom that I am not doing enough for my mom on her special day. Gifts often seem mediocre, no matter how extravagant they may be. The one thing I am sure of is that a good meal provides the perfect way to start (or end) the day. Whether your mom enjoys breakfast, brunch, lunch, or dinner – the day is likely to book up quickly, so make your reservations (or start planning your meal) before it’s too late!
My mom is simple. She enjoys healthy, local food preferably with large quantities of vegetables. (Although I’d prefer a steak, it’s her day.) My mom is a runner and avid CrossFitter. She also works locally as a registered nurse. She enjoys her eggs every morning, and salads every evening. On the very rare occasion she goes out for a meal, she will usually pick Thai food. My recommendations for her are always Raan Thai in Smithtown and Sawadee Thai in East Northport. Although my mom may be the exception to the rule, I am sure there are plenty of moms out there who enjoy a healthy meal as well. My favorite, local healthier spots include, but are not limited to Lota Veco, The Purple Elephant, Tula Kitchen, Rustic Root, and Tiger Lily Café.
If your mom is a foodie, and looking for a good ‘cheat meal’, I recommend brunch at Mercato Kitchen and Cocktails, Old Fields, Mill Pond House, and/or Besito. For something a bit more upscale, try Jonathan’s, Polo Restaurant, or Milleridge Inn. If you’re opting for lunch or dinner, I recommend Old Fields BBQ, Vauxhall, The Shed, Tullulah’s, Rincon Criollo, and/or Off The Block. Check your neighborhood favorites for Mother’s Day menus, and specials.
If you’re opting to cook at home for mom, my go-to spread includes bagels, lox, homemade herbed cream cheese, red onion, tomatoes, and capers. Serve with mimosas or Bloody Mary’s for a kick. Presentation is equally important, so head over to Pinterest or check your favorite food blogs for a surplus of visual tips. If you’re in the mood to serve up something hot, I recommend a French toast bake, with a side of sausage or a homemade sweet potato and chorizo hash, with a side of eggs. Poached eggs are a bit more difficult to master, but they certainly dress up any entrée.
Whether you’re dining out or in, make sure you put some thought into Mother’s Day this year. Make a reservation in advance (or aim to prepare/cook an unforgettable spread), and bring along a bouquet of flowers. After all, our moms have supported us, fed us, and showed up for us…
365 days a year.

Lemon Glazed Blueberry Scones

Here’s What You Need:

2 cups all-purpose flour

1/3 cup sugar

1 tablespoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 lemon (1 teaspoon lemon zest for dough and 1 tablespoon lemon juice

for glaze)

4 tablespoons unsalted butter – 1/2 stick

1/2 cup whole milk + 1 extra tablespoon milk * if needed

1 egg

1 teaspoon vanilla

1/2 cup fresh blueberries

Here’s How You Do It:

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Lightly grease a baking sheet. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and zest. Cut in butter. Add milk and egg together; stir with a fork. Pour into flour & butter mixture and mix at first with a spatula and then with your hands until it forms a dough. Turn dough out onto a lightly-floured surface; carefully incorporate blueberries and knead briefly. Roll dough out into a 7-inch round shape. Cut into 6 wedges and place on prepared baking sheet. Keep scones in a circle shape, expand the circle, and spread them out 1 1/2 inches apart. Bake 18 – 20 minutes, or until golden-brown. While scones are cooling down, make the lemon glaze and drizzle on top of each cooled scone.

Lemon Glaze: 1/2 cup powdered sugar, plus one tablespoon lemon juice. If too thick add your lemon juice or water. Mix well and drizzle over scones with a fork.

Trendiest Summer LIP SHADES

There’s so much to love about summer! Everything gets a little brighter – especially when it comes to our hair, nails or even makeup. We’re all determined for this summer to be different than the last, roaring ‘20s round two. In turn, we’ll be sure to see some bright and playful lips! Those soft nudes and browns will be taking a backseat as vibrant and pastel hues come out to play.

While Covid-19 put a stop to a majority of lip trends last year, the gloss texture trend has been starting back up and lip products are once again a must-have makeup essential. Since masks are still a part of our everyday routine, using a matte lipstick is the best lip product that won’t bleed or transfer. For when you remove your mask, you can apply a gloss to give your lips a nice shiny finish. This way, you can still participate in the colorful trends without sacrificing the residue on your mask.

These summer colors will be reflective of all our moods, especially as we look towards moving forward after a rough year and start to get our lives back on track. See below for long-lasting *vegan* lip products with shades that you’ll be sure to see all over your IG feed and IRL too!

Lime Crime has been a vegan and cruelty-free brand before it was the norm. The brand is known for their vibrant and colorful makeup and hair products so individuals can celebrate life through color. Beet It Matte Lipstick ($20, limecrime.com) is a perfect base. You can top it off with a coat of lip gloss like, Extra Extra Poppin Wet Cherry Lip Gloss ($24, limecrime.com).

Christian Audette, the luxury beauty brand recently partnered with Gigi Goode to create a limited-edition collection of four new lip products. BLOODE ($29, christianaudette.com) is a suede matte bold red lipstick that is formulated to be hydrating and comfortable on the lips, while also having the staying power of a matte. The lipstick is enriched with Vitamins C & E to support collagen production and fight free radicals, while moisturizing ingredients work to hydrate and prevent creasing, flaking and drying.

Honest Beauty offers a Demi Matte Lip Crayon in Peony ($12.99, honest.com) which locks in high-impact color with a glide-on-the-go matte lip crayon. The satiny soft lip crayon delivers a luscious, demi-matte finish. For those who are more of a lip balm fanatic the Tinted Lip Balm in Dragon Fruit ($8.99, honest.com) is for you. It’s a happy medium between the balm and lipstick which you’ve been craving in a sheen, juicy sweet shade.

Sangria 71 – Flavors of Spain

From the coastal province of Galicia, Spain, brothers Rosendo and Jose Fernández were destined to create a restaurant brand that has become synonymous with love, family, and cultural tradition. From their early years spent surrounded by fresh produce, farm-raised animals, and the simple, yet flavorful cooking of their mother Sofia, the brothers were inspired to pursue the American dream. In 1978, at the ages of five and six, Rosendo and Jose immigrated to the United States to meet up with their father, Rosendo Sr., who had already become a well known chef in Greenwich Village. It was in these early moments of childhood that spawned a journey to devote their lives to bring together food, family, and friends.

Sangria 71, with locations in Commack, Williston Park and Island Park specialize in bringing the flavors of Spain to their patrons. Offering a wide selection of tapas, steaks, chicken, seafood, and savory family style paellas, artfully paired with irresistible sangrias and fine wines, makes for a dining experience you are certain to remember.

Dining at their Commack location, we began with a pitcher of their white sangria, which is bit softer than the red and not as sweet. With that, followed a myriad of delicious tapas. To highlight a few, we started with crispy artichokes served with a side of garlic aioli and hot sauce-lightly fried, not breaded-made this a guiltless pleasure. The solomillo – filet mignon tips in a mushroom sauce were presented as tender morsels of beef that were rich and flavorful. Last was simple, yet most notable for me-fried manchego cheese, with a honey drizzle; delivered a nice balance of sweet and savory notes.

My partner is a vegetarian, so she opted for the sauteed spinach, garbanzo beans and cubed carrots in a garlic sauce; offering a generous portion that was surprisingly light, yet full of flavor. If you prefer something else as your main, ask your server if they can give it to you as a side. You will find the staff at Sangria 71 are eager to please. I came hungry and went for the Veal Oso Bucco. Braised for three hours, the meat was fork tender, literally falling away from the bone; the most delicate cut of meat, with a melt in your mouth quality. Superb!

Sangria 71 has an endless selection of desserts, but we were lured by our server to select two menu favorites. Tres Leches Coco; a homemade (made on-premises) coconut layer cake. Served with a side of vanilla ice cream, was so creamy and fresh that my fork cut through it like butter. Finally, the homemade hazelnut truffle- a hazelnut gelato that consists of a dark chocolate center with hazelnuts and meringue, sent my tastebuds into orbit. To complete the meal, we paired it with a comforting cup of cappuccino…need I say more?

Warm ambience, pleasant staff and unforgettable entrees combined with an authentic approach to the kind of food Rosendo and Jose’s mom made back in Galacia, Spain makes Sangria 71 a must on your to do list.

Filetto’s Ristorante

Tucked away in the heart of East Northport appears to be an unpretentious pizzeria and restaurant. There’s nothing wrong with that, however, once you’ve been, you’ll be pleasantly delighted to find how untypical Filetto’s truly is.

Upon entering, you’re immediately pulled into their display of freshly made gourmet pies, like their focaccia: a thinly crusted pizza, first baked in garlic and oil, then topped with homemade fresh mozzarella, tomato, basil and roasted peppers, drizzled with a pesto sauce. (Oh my goodness!) Though they have a wide selection of gourmet pies, they are most known for: their brick oven pizzas. These pies have a unique flavor and texture. The crust and accompanied topping deliver a crispier and richer flavor – there is nothing quite like it! Try the Quattro Stagioni: a plum tomato and basil sauce, with fresh mozzarella, topped with quartered artichoke hearts, black olives, prosciutto and mushroom. A crispy, thin crust with a little char adds a depth of flavor that customers can’t get enough of.

Owners, Rich and Vinny, who have owned and operated Filetto’s for close to 20 years, boasts a diverse menu of southern Italian fare that makes it worth visiting. Though the pies were tempting, we decided to dine in and experience a variety of apps and entrees. One of the starters included: stuffed baked clams (four oversized clams with freshly chopped clams, onions, peppers, topped with a light scampi sauce), just lightly breaded, you can taste the freshness come through – the best I’ve ever had.  Also, on the menu: the artichoke francese, (baby artichoke hearts battered and sautéed in a white wine lemon sauce) were delicate and full of flavor.

For the main course, I chose the Shrimp Oreganata, but asked if they could lay the shrimp over a bed of spinach. (I love when a server says, “no problem”.) The shrimp were plump and succulent. And, what I loved most…they pulled those annoying shrimp tails off– that was a first. My wife, being a vegetarian, went for the Eggplant Rollatini.

When I think Rollatini, I imagine little rolled up logs of eggplant. Not Today! Filetto’s delivers a bountiful portion of three ovesized pieces of eggplant – stuffed in the creamiest, seasoned ricotta with melted mozzarella, topped with a ladle of pomodoro sauce. Simply delish!!

The dessert selection at Filetto’s is plentiful. The Brownie Sliders were ridiculous: three good size squares with a white cream center and chocolate glaze. I Bet you can’t eat all three. The Salted Caramel Gelato Tartufo was sweet, savory, salty, and decadent. They were probably the best desserts I’ve had in a long time.

Filetto’s is a neighborhood haunt but is certainly worth coming to explore. Bravo!!
