Having a Heat Wave?

If you need a new air conditioner, you will also need this Secret Formula…

Using the W.H.I.L.E. Formula will help you when buying a new window or through the wall AC unit. This formula tells you the BTU size you will need to cool your room efficiently, because sometimes salespeople at stores use a formula that only helps to sell inventory. So it is best for you to calculate your BTU size before you even leave your house. The W. H. I. L. E. Formula divided by 60 equals the BTU size needed:

W = Width of your room

H = Height of your room

I = Insulation value in the walls
~ Plug in the value of 10 for "I" when you have well insulated walls with R-13 or higher insulation value.
~ Plug in the value of 18 for "I" when you have poorly insulated walls with R-11 or less.

L = Length of your room

E = Exposure
~ Take the longest wall in the room that is exposed to the outside and see which direction that wall faces:
~ Plug in the value of 16 if that wall is facing North
~ Plug in the value of 17 if that wall is facing East
~ Plug in the value of 18 if that wall is facing South
~ Plug in the value of 20 if that wall is facing West

Then multiply W x H x I x L x E divided by 60 to equal the BTU size you need

The WHILE formula DOES NOT calculate factors such as:
• Body heat adds up, but I don't think you are having a party all weekend long, every weekend.
• Window exposure, are they facing south or west or both? If yes, use shades or close your curtains!
• Large openings into another room. If yes, close the doors to that room.
• An Upstairs room with a poorly insulated Attic floor above. Insulate only the floor of your attic with R-30 and vapor barrier facing the attic floor.
If you are adding more insulation in the attic to what is already there, DO NOT add additional vapor barriers!
• Uninsulated Basement ceiling that is below the room being cooled. Insulate the ceiling of a non-heated basement with R-19, vapor barrier
facing up to the ceiling of the basement.

Once you know your BTU size you can go shopping and LOOK for the Energy Guide Label on the floor models. You want to find a model in the BTU size you need that has the best Energy Efficient Rating. Even if the AC unit has the Energy Star Label that DOES NOT necessarily mean you are buying the most energy efficient model made. You have to use the Energy Guide to know and compare.

Also don't worry about the most efficient model costing $75 or $125 dollars more, you will save that difference on the electric bill within the first full season of use. For more details visit EnergyHotwire.com or GoingTrueGreen.com anytime.

A Family Vacation… Only a Car Ride Away

Tammy Severino is the President of RPC Development, a business and development consulting firm for local businesses and not-for-profit organizations. She has more than 20 years of experience in writing, from business writing to journalism to creative writing. several short stories and is working on her first novel.

Summertime typically equals family vacation time.  Vacations provide time to reconnect and relax together, but can be a major undertaking. Sometimes, planning a vacation an airplane ride away is more than a family can manage (logistically and financially). We found several locales you can drive to that offer great options for families.
Ocean City, Maryland is located on a barrier island off the Atlantic Ocean and is famous for its wild ponies (a definite plus for us). Ocean City is, in most parts, a mere ten miles long and less than a half mile wide. That small space, however, packs a lot of vacation punch for families. There are beaches, a renowned Boardwalk, amusement parks, family friendly restaurants, concerts on the beach and more. Ocean City offers the definitive beach vacation, whether as active or lazy as your family desires.
A fairly quick ride into Connecticut will bring you to Mystic. This seaside village offers what many consider the ultimate historic vacation. Mystic caters to families without sacrificing its true historic character. One of New England’s most popular sites is Mystic Seaport. Once upon a time, Mystic was the region’s center for shipbuilding, dating back to days of the colonists. During the Revolutionary War and World War I, Mystic became the hub for American shipbuilding with over 600 ships calling Mystic their birthplace. Enjoy boutique hotels, bed & breakfasts, shopping, restaurants and Mystic Aquarium. Take in the architecture, historic drawbridge at the town’s center and incredible charm.
The Berkshire Mountains, in Western Massachusetts, provides a picturesque setting complete with gorges, rivers, and brilliant greenery. The area was developed over 100 years ago by artists and those needing an escape from the city. Summer cottages sprung up as famous authors, artists and others ventured north of New York for a taste of nature. Though there are many festivals that speak to those with an artistic flair, the area has much to offer families looking for a getaway. Museums abound for those preferring the indoors and canoeing, hiking and horseback riding for outdoorsy types.
The Poconos, Pennsylvania’s well known vacation region offers a great family getaway. From themed hotels to house rentals, there is something for everyone. There are waterparks, a wild animal park (we’ve been there…it’s a lot of fun), boating, horseback riding, mountain biking or taking in the scenery.
Wherever you choose, remember to leave some unscheduled time to just be with each other. This is the part of the year where time stops, obligations are on hold, and stress stays at arm’s length.  Make memories that will last all year long.

Enlighten Up: Being Happy

We tend to get it backwards.  We often think, "If I could make more money, or meet my true love, or find that ideal job, then I will be happy".

We need to FEEL HAPPY FIRST, then all of our desires come to us.  Because many of us are in habit of focusing on what is going wrong in our days, or on the things that we don't want, it is easy to become disconnected from our happy place. Ask yourself what you are giving your focus to and make an intention to spend more time focusing on the things that give you a feeling of joy. We are all emotional magnets. We get more of what we focus on and how we are choosing to feel.  Feelings of unhappiness attract more feelings of unhappiness and feeling happy attracts more to feel happy about.  We also tend to blame others for our feelings of unhappiness. Or we feel we need someone to be or act a certain way to make us happy.  Everyone is on their own spiritual life path. And the behaviors of others have only to do with themselves and nothing to do with us. We tend to take things very personally and allow it to affect our own enlightened state.  Look for happiness from within yourself and not dependent on what others do or say.  Don't wait for happiness to find you.  Find it for yourself in everything that is working for you. If you take time out in your day, you will see how much there is to be grateful for, and feelings of gratitude create feelings of happiness.  Be grateful for all the little things, the beautiful weather,  your hot morning shower, the abundance of food in your refrigerator, the way the song on the radio makes you feel like singing out loud.

If you haven't felt this, you just stopped noticing, that's all. There is so much to be grateful for right under your nose.  Spend time looking for things to appreciate  and acknowledging all that you have.  Go on and sing out loud.  Express feelings of joy.  Do the happy dance now and you will be amazed by the abundance of happiness that comes your way, in ways that you least expect them!

Get Into The Swing of Summer Safety

      Family Features

Summer is a time of playground fun, swimming, boating, biking, camping and other outdoor activities. Unfortunately, these activities can lead to a higher risk of injuries.

Playground 101
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that every year emergency departments treat more than 200,000 children ages 14 and younger for playground-related injuries.
•    Choose parks and playgrounds that are appropriate for their age and offer shock-absorbing surfaces.
•    Teach children that pushing and shoving on the
playground can result in accidents and injuries.
•    Remind kids to go down the slide one at a time and to wait until the slide is completely clear before taking their turn. Teach them to always sit facing forward with their legs straight in front of them and to never slide down headfirst.
•    Remind children to swing sitting down. Encourage them to wait until the swing stops before getting off and to be careful when walking in front of moving swings.

Make a Safe Splash
While playing poolside may be a blast, Safe Kids Worldwide reports that drowning is the leading cause of injury-related death for children ages 1 to 4 and it is the third leading cause of injury-related death among children 19 and under. Additionally, University of Michigan Health Systems estimates that each year about 6,000 young people under age 14 are hospitalized because of a diving injury, with one in five sustaining a spinal cord injury.
•    Teach children to never swim alone or go near water without an adult present.
•    Give children your undivided attention when they are swimming or are near any body of water.
•    Always jump in feet first to check the depth before
diving into any body of water.
•    Never dive in the shallow end of the pool or into above-ground pools.
Fun on the Water
Boating, tubing and other water sports can be great fun but can also be dangerous. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, nearly 71 percent of all boating fatalities are caused from drowning, 85 percent of which are a result of not wearing a life jacket.
•    Always have children wear a Coast Guard-approved, properly fitted life jacket while on a boat, around an open body of water or when participating in water sports.
•    Educate yourself. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, 86 percent of boating accident deaths involve boaters who have not completed a safety course.
•    Always check water conditions and forecasts before going out on the water.

Mowing Matters
Thousands of children are injured in lawn mower accidents each year, some severely. Lawn mower injuries account for a large percentage of accidental amputations according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. The Academy cautions that the speed of a typical lawn mower blade can send dirt and bacteria deep into a wound, creating a high risk
for severe infection.
•    Teach children to never play on or around a lawn mower, even when it is not in use. They should never be permitted to walk beside, in front of or behind a moving mower.
•    Children under 6 years of age should be kept inside the home while mowing.
•    Children should be at least 12 years of age before operating a push lawn mower and at least 16 years of age
before operating a riding lawn mower.

The Islanders are moving to Brooklyn and the Long Island hockey fans will “Bring the roar to Brooklyn”.

Barclays Center, now home to the Islanders, will pay homage to the Islanders tradition and promote the team with great respect for the loyal Islanders fans. The team’s logo and colors will not change. The big four STANLEY CUP CHAMPIONSHIP banners and six retired jerseys will sway with pride from the rafters. Your favorite announcer Roger Luce, from Nassau Coliseum will continue tradition as announcer at Barclays Center. The great Islanders legends Mike Bossy, Butch Goring, Clark Gilles and Bobby Nystrom will serve as chosen ambassadors to Brooklyn’s Barclays Center and will be making guest appearances. The current super-fan group – Blue and Orange Army will relocate and lead the chants from section 229.

The venue has some magnificent features. The Islanders glass seats offer the best sightlines of any other arena in the NHL. The seats on the glass are positioned three feet higher than average front row seats, and make you feel you are on top of the action. Suites at Barclays Center are the closest to the ice of any NHL team in the New York market.

General season tickets for the Islanders inaugural 2015-16 season at Barclays Center went on sale in February. You can purchase season tickets by calling 844-33-Isles or by going online at www.barclayscenter.com/ny-islanders. Half season plans will soon go on sale. The West End Club offers premium seats at ice level behind the west end goal. It’s just steps away from the Calvin Klein Club and Calvin Klein VIP entrance. Plans are being made with the Long Island Railroad to feature prioritized service to specific branches for Islanders fans after hockey games.

“Bring Your Roar to Brooklyn” and watch the Islanders take it all the way.

Beach Attire Alternatives

"Stephanie recently graduated from Syracuse University where she studied Communication and Rhetorical Studies. She now works in the television industry. Outside of her work, she enjoys traveling, watching television, reading and being with family and friends."

With 4th of July just around the corner, we have yet another reason to exercise our love for the summertime and dress up for the holiday that celebrates our independence. So why not exercise your fashion independence as well with alternative pool and BBQ party outfits that will leave you feeling confidentially cool no matter what.
Although pool and BBQ parties call for extremely casual attire, they are also the perfect place to ditch your old rollover shorts and favorite t-shirt and trade them in for something with a little more style to help you stand out and feel your best. A super easy pool outfit, which also can act as a bathing suit cover-up, is a romper. This one-piece article comes in various styles, colors, patterns and sizes and is also extremely easy to pack as a change of clothes since its one piece. The best part about a romper? Not having to worry about trying to match your shorts and your top. If you are attending a nighttime BBQ and it’s a little chilly out, a jumpsuit works similarly to a romper, just with pants instead of shorts. Rompers and jumpsuits are generally made out of soft, cotton fabric, making them stylish, comfortable and practical all at once.
If dresses are more your style, but you don’t want a tight dress that shows your weird bathing suit lines through it, the shift dress is an easy and cute fix. Shift dresses, while being great for all occasions, are more roomy and comfortable because of their flowy, easy and “shapeless” style. Perfect to throw over your bathing suit or even to wear for a night out to dinner, this style beats the shorts and tank top combo in not just looks but also in comfort.
Another style that works as an alternative to the average pair of soffe shorts are the ever-popular patterned shorts. These shorts, available at many retail stores and smaller boutiques, are comfortable, loose fitting and can be worn with almost any plain colored top. They usually are slightly high-waisted so they could even be worn as an alternative to high-waisted jean shorts for additional comfort and a little more room to breathe.
These alternative styles, while perfect for a 4th of July party you are attending or hosting, are also perfect for any summer day. Rompers, jumpsuits, shift dresses and dressy patterned shorts are all styles that are here to stay this season. Their comfort, style and practicality make them perfect outfit choices that will leave everyone envious of your style.

Oh, the relaxing days of summer…So, who’s relaxing?  We know it’s not anyone expecting company or surprise visitors. I often begin one of my seminars by asking: What if the phone rings and a dear pal from your far distant past is on the other end, an hour away between planes, and just dying “to stop by for a quick visit”?  What would you do and is your home “visitor ready” at all times?
What do you do to relieve the stress of drop-in visitors? Obviously, if you were “mostly clutter free,” it wouldn’t be too difficult to do a quick once over. Oh – there’s that mostly clutter free. More of us are mastering that skill with understanding of why it’s so important – even if you’re not in to Feng Shui (that famous Chinese dish that should be on everyone’s menu).  Though it might be hard work to get it that way, the end result is worth it.  However, even if your have your house under control, you still have to live in it.  But day to day living “stuff” is different.  It’s the kind you can get a handle on in an hour before unexpected company knocks on your door.
    • So – there’s damp towels in the bathroom and yesterday’s underwear and socks, as well as the toothpaste, make-up and brush on the counter. It takes less than two minutes to put the dirty clothes (including the hamper stuff) into the washer and store your personal things in their designated places.
    • Another 3 minutes to make the bed and hang up yesterday’s outfit or put it in the trunk of your car to go to the cleaners. The trunk! What a great place for clutterers to hide their stuff!  Just back the car halfway into the garage….No–No! Just kidding.
    • Ten minutes to vacuum or dry mop.
    • Five minutes to clean off kitchen counter surfaces.
    • Five minutes to top dust in main areas.
    • Five minutes to check the powder room for fresh towels, bathroom spray, and to clean the sink and bowl.
    • Five minutes to empty all waste baskets and garbage pails and take them to an outside pail.
    • Five more minutes to put something in the oven, like frozen cookies, not whatever you dumped from the counter, and put up a pot of coffee. (Nothing smells better when guests arrive).
    • Then a quick shower.  Don’t forget to stick the towels in the washer, take a deep breath and get ready to open the door with a smile and enjoy your company.

To make entertaining less stressful, have on hand at all times: fresh fruit, nuts, cheese, wine and crackers, and treat yourself to the purchase of fresh flowers weekly or pick some from your own garden.

Panera Bread Calls Chipotle’s Bid To Deliver Healthier Food To Customers

Paul A. Lauto, Esq. received his Juris Doctor from New York Law School in 1990. In 2002 Mr. Lauto established Paul A. Lauto, PLLC (Now
located at 565 Route 25A, Suite 207, Miller Place, NY 11764; (631) 928-1430; www.liattorney.com), with a primary concentration on personal injury, all types of accident cases and more.

In an effort to change the obesity problem in America, more and more people are on a quest to eat healthier and live a healthier lifestyle.  Today the amount of people choosing to eat healthier is rising like a tidal wave and so are the profits of those companies willing to accommodate this healthier food choice.  Chipotle Mexican Grill recently announced that their food has become GMO free at no additional cost, in support of their effort to provide high quality food to its customers.  Not to be outmatched, Panera Bread has made a healthy change of their own.
Panera Bread is a chain restaurant that started out in 1981 as Au Bon Pain Co, Inc. and was founded by Louis Lane and Ron Shaich.  It wasn't until 1999, after significant success, that the name changed at many locations to Panera Bread.  Today Panera Bread has over 1,800 locations in 45 states, the District of Columbia and Ontario, Canada.  Initially, Panera Bread was well known for its fresh baked breads, fresh cracked egg breakfasts and freshly prepared sandwiches.  Subsequently, Panera started to go in the opposite direction, as the eggs became pre-cooked and the oatmeal would slide out of a plastic bag after being heated.  But now, it would appear that Panera Bread has had a revelation and truly endeavors to provide healthier food for its customers.
Panera Bread has announced their commitment to eliminate all artificial preservatives, colorings, sweeteners and flavors in their food by the end of 2016.  This includes dropping some 150 different ingredients from their menu items.  According to Panera Bread, "We are committed to making a positive impact on our food system.  We believe guests deserve to know not only what is in their food, but where it comes from and how companies are impacting the food system."  Panera further stated, "If the ingredients in your food are unpronounceable we believe they shouldn't be in your food."
When asked why they haven't eliminated GMO's from their food, a Panera Bread representative explained, "GMO's are a tremendously complex issue due to their extensive reach into America's corn, soy and sugar supplies-ingredients and sub-ingredients in much of the food we eat.  For Panera's menu… the task of identifying GMO's is additionally complex."  The Panera representative continued by saying that they do however, support having a federal GMO label law so that people can at least know if GMO's are in the food they eat.
While eliminating artificial ingredients from their food is certainly commendable, it is difficult to understand why Panera Bread could not eliminate GMO's as well.  Clearly, eliminating GMO's wasn't too "complicated" for Chipotle and they even did so at no additional cost to the consumer.  In addition, while its nice that Panera Bread supports a federal GMO label law, that is not a valid excuse for failing to voluntarily label and identify GMO's in their food.  Many companies have voluntarily labeled their foods GMO free, Whole Foods is in the process of implementing a store wide voluntary GMO label program and Trader Joe's maintains that all foods bearing their label are GMO free.
Notwithstanding the foregoing, it is clear that the American people are demanding a healthy change in our food system and restaurants are finally starting to respond to that demand.  Years from now historians will look back in disbelief and question why we allowed the Biotech Industry, to effectively contaminate our food supply for as long as they did.  The ostensible answer will be corporate greed, lust for power and the love of money.

Visiting Long Island’s Fairs & Festivals

Tammy Severino is the President of RPC Development, a business and development consulting firm for local businesses and not-for-profit organizations. She has more than 20 years of experience in writing, from business writing to journalism to creative writing. In her spare time, this fashionista follows and writes about fashion, travel, and other lifestyle topics.

Long Island is a veritable playground of festivals and fairs. Nearly every weekend from May through October, you can find events with music, crafts, artisans, rides, yummy foods and more.
Throughout the season, over 30 town-wide fairs, often produced by local Chambers of Commerce, are held, offering local businesses an opportunity to put their best feet forward. Such is the case of the Bellmore, Mineola and Smithtown Street Fairs. Some run for one day; others for a weekend. Check chamber websites for details on fairs in your area.
Head east to the 61st Mattituck Strawberry Festival (June 18-21) to sample all things strawberry. The Heckscher Festival, held at Heckscher State Park (June 20-21), offers games and activities to please the whole family.
July brings us across the south shore from the Great South Bay Music Festival in Patchogue (July 17th) to the Hamptons Food & Wine Festival (July 25-26th).
August bring Haunt Faire, a tribute to all things scary (August 1-2nd) while North Fork Craft Beer Festival in Calverton will entice craft beer lovers (August 8th). The following day the LI Potato Festival sets up at Calverton Links, featuring a farmers’ market and a tribute to LI’s history. From August 7-9th the 26th Annual Sayville Summerfest is underway, a family fun festival featuring the region’s boating roots. That same weekend, Sag Harbor’s American Music Festival takes place, featuring live performances with Americana flair. The end of the month brings us to Suffolk Community College for the LI Shakespeare Festival (August 28-29th).
As September arrives, so does the 69th Annual Shinnecock Pow Wow Native American Indian Festival (4-7th), Westhampton Festival of the Arts (September 5-6th), and 4th Annual Long Beach International Film Festival (September 24th).
Three of the biggest festivals take place toward the end of the ‘season’ and draw tremendous crowds.  The Greenport Maritime Festival (September 25-27th), produced by the East End Seaport Museum & Marine Foundation, offers music, movies, tall ships, great food, and more. It is everything you think of in a nautically themed event. The Huntington Fall Festival (October 9-12th), fills Heckscher Park with rides, games, food, music and vendors as far as the eye can see.  Oyster Bay’s Oyster Festival (October 17-18th), the largest waterfront festival on the east coast, offers family activities, seafood and shopping, all while raising funds for local charities.
Whatever your interests, LI’s festivals and fairs have it. Go to one; go to many…try them out and have a great time!
