My Happy Place Boutique was opened on August 25, 2023.  Prior to opening her unique boutique, Luisa Cavallo-LaCorte was a special education teacher’s assistant for thirteen years working in the Elwood and Hauppauge school districts.  Luisa had a vision to create an exceptional experience for her customers.  Making others feel beautiful and confident at affordable prices is her mission.  They offer a wide selection of products, including clothing for Tweens, Juniors, and Ladies (sizes small – XXL), accessories, unique gifts, bath & body, inspirational items, seasonal, beautiful jewelry and so much more.  By stocking items in limited quantities, there is always something new for you to discover.  My Happy Place Boutique offers high quality products at affordable prices.  New merchandise arrives daily!

What sets My Happy Place Boutique apart from other fashion boutiques is that they strive to partner with locally sourced women owned businesses that stock the store with unique, quality clothing, accessories, bath & body items, beautiful jewelry and so much more. Last month they hosted W.R.E.N. Fashion Show at Napper Tandy’s in Smithtown spotlighting styles and fashions from the store. Luisa and My Happy Place Boutique will be featured on CBS News this month!

My Happy Place Boutique’s goal is that once you walk through their doors, you’ll feel welcomed, comfortable, and beautiful.  Even if you leave the store without a purchase, Luisa’s hope is that you enjoyed your time there browsing, maybe chatting with her, or having a cup of coffee and that you leave feeling a sense of happiness and are inspired to visit them again!

Career Development: Scratching the Job Change Itch

Like scratching an annoying itch, making a job change feels great once you land a new gig. However, it’s a stressful and laborious process where you will be frequently riding an emotional rollercoaster. And, if spending just one more day with your present employer feels about as enjoyable as having root canal without Novocain, then let’s add desperation into the mix.

Regardless of the reasons and circumstances for why you are scratching the job change itch, you must be attuned to the following components.

Adopt A Detective Mindset

Getting positive responses to your search efforts send will your spirits soaring, especially if it’s from a prospective employer you want to work for. You know that those involved in the hiring process will be on their best behavior and to land you, will exaggerate their beauty marks and not be completely forthcoming about their blemishes. In my consulting work, I coach candidates on how to use this detective mind set to get the complete picture about the opportunity.

One component of this mind set is questions that create a trustful atmosphere that encourages the interviewer to be transparent. See below.

What would a typical day for me in this role look like? Not only is this a great question, but it also forces the interviewer to begin envisioning you in the role. Once this starts, it does not stop.

What are the goals of your department and what are some examples of the contributions I need to make in achieving them? Again, you are being pictured in the job. Additionally, the question conveys your desire to be a doer and difference maker.

Changing jobs changes your life and there is no margin for error. Dig deep!

What’s Your Definition of the Grass is Greener on the Other Side?

Except for transitioning into a new field, it is common to expect that making a job change will increase your income. So, let’s put money aside and look at other areas of potentially greener grass. I love it when someone changes jobs to become a “bigger fish in a smaller sea.” Same holds true when they tell me that their new role is one where making a meaningful contribution is spelled out versus floated in vague language. And for my ambitious clients seeking to build a career versus holding a job, I’m thrilled when they tell me that a prospective employer promotes from within.

No one else’s greener grass is your greener grass. Do not take a job just because the company has great PTO benefits. Take the job because you can see yourself being fulfilled in it.

Buckle Up: Welcome Aboard the Emotional Roller Coaster

Unless you get hired quickly, you will find job searching emotionally taxing. Research done by LinkedIn in 2022 found that the average time to find a job is about two months and gets even longer when the candidate pool is populated with numerous exceptional candidates.

Consider this scenario: On Monday, you send out eight resumes. Tuesday through Friday, not a peep. Finally, late Friday afternoon, your phone rings. You answer it hoping it’s one of the companies you applied to. Instead, it’s a “sorry, wrong number” call. Happy hour has just moved up to an earlier timeslot.

Here’s another. Over two weeks you have had three interviews for what you view as a sensational opportunity. Today was the last one and the vibe you picked up is that they are going to extend an offer. Around 4 p.m. your phone rings. It’s them. They are going with another candidate. You wonder if the Grandma’s slices you had before the interview gave you garlic breath.

My experience is that people stay put and do not scratch the job change itch because it can be an arduous uphill climb with more disappointments than successes.

That said, a new job or career path can change your life. It’s worth the climb.

Good luck to all!

Home & Garden: How Does Your Garden Grow?

After an April of far more than a few showers, a May of spectacular flowers seems a reasonable request. The soil is moist and healthy, and the sun is shining. So, what is the recipe for a colorful and lush front or backyard? Choosing your flowers involves a few key considerations – timing, color, and height.

Timing involves the blooming cycle of each of your flowering trees, bulbs, perennials, and annuals. Some bloom early in spring while others will show their colors mid or late season. And, of course, some keep blooming all throughout the season. Selecting trees and flowers that bloom at different times of the season will provide your yard or front view with color all throughout the season. Be sure to place them in your garden based on partial or full sun or shade. Each flower has a preference.

Height is another important consideration. If two sets of flowers bloom simultaneously, you’ll need varying heights to prevent one blocking out the other. This will also allow you to plant with depth in your flower beds. Your flower beds will have a richer look if flowers are set in the front, center, and back versus along in a single file row. In addition to ensuring each flower gets enough sunshine, the variation in height will underscore the depth and provide each flower type to have its own spotlight. Height will also allow you to choose a more manicured garden or, perhaps, a wilder, freer English garden effect.

Color is so important in planning your yard. Choose what speaks to you. Do you prefer monotone? Choose a garden of all white, pink, or lavender for a dramatic effect. Two to three colors or shades that work well together will soften the look yet pull the overall garden ‘theme’ together. For more of a rainbow inspired vibe, choose a little of everything and enjoy the interplay of all the colors as they bloom throughout the spring and summer seasons.

There are no hard, set rules here. The key is whether you are enjoying the environment you have created for yourself, your family, and any visitors you may have. Be sure you get to enjoy each bloom by giving each flower its own moment to shine. Water regularly as your flowers need a good drink every day once planted and, particularly when summer heat takes hold. A special note for our gardening pet owners…if you plan to take clippings of your flowers and bring them indoors, be sure your flowers are pet friendly. No flower is lovely enough to make up for harming a four-legged member of the family.

Happy gardening to one and all.

In the Kitchen: Blackstone Steakhouse

Several times over the last decade, I’ve had the pleasure of catching up with Colin McKaharay, executive Chef at Blackstone Steakhouse. Chef Colin graduated from the New England Culinary Institute and attended Tulane University where he completed his education and received his B.S. in Hospitality Management.

As the master of the meats at one of the most renowned steakhouses on Long Island,  McKaharay’s passion for elevating the culinary experience never seems to tire. After joining Blackstone over eleven years ago, the mission has been to continue to elevate the dining experience for its patrons. In 2018 Chef Colin worked tirelessly in attaining one of the most prestigious certifications awarded to a restaurant. Blackstone has become one of two restaurants on the entire eastern seaboard that has the rights to carry and serve authentic and certified Kobe beef. Over the years, the word Kobe has become loosely used as a means of associating high quality beef. As executive Chef Colin McKaharay explains, “there is Wagyu beef and then there is Wagyu, that comes from Kobe Japan.” Known for its’ fine marbling characteristics and naturally enhanced flavor profile, tenderness, and juiciness, it has taken the Blackstone diner loyalist next level. To have the rights to supply its patrons with authentic Kobe Beef signifies Blackstone’s stellar reputation.

By the time this article was published, on May 22nd Executive Chef McKaharay had orchestrated Blackstone’s 9th annual Meatonism. It’s an idea that Chef Colin came up with that pays tribute to what was called back in the early twentieth century “Beefsteak Dinner”.

A definition I found explained it this way, “Beefsteak dinners” were served banquet style with no frills, no utensils and no napkins. Waiters would bring out trays of thinly sliced meat and bread for diners to eat with their hands. Guests wore aprons and butcher hats and when things got a little messy, they could wipe the grease off on their aprons.

You ate (and in pre-prohibition times, drank beer) until you had your fill”.

Basically it’s a meat fest, a night of pure gluttony where patrons eat ridiculously large amounts of beef while drinking beer and bourbon. (Knife & Fork Optional)

Close to a decade long tradition, Blackstone’s Meatonism appears to be growing more in popularity. Mark your calendar and start to inquire early April 2025 and participate in the greatest of the deadly sins by attending Blackstone’s Meatonism next year.

Blackstone is more than just a steakhouse, it’s a dining experience that will take you on a journey through many regions and cultures that will continue to intrigue its’ customers for many years to come.
