Dressing Your Dining Room For The Holidays

At this time of year our “social selves” are on display. With all the stresses of the holidays – shopping, extra traffic, winter weather colds, sleep-over company (some welcome, some tolerated) and general time constraint pressures, dressing the holiday table and the room it’s in may take a back seat, especially when you’re worried about actually cooking the meal. From my vantage point, however, decorating the dining room for the holidays has gotten me, personally, through many mediocre meals with flying colors. My guests were so dazzled by the décor that the food, by association, seemed better than it really was.

So, here’s a “non-cook’s” recipe for a successful holiday dinner party.

•    Pre-set the table with a lovely cloth and your best company or holiday dishes and accessories in advance of the day. You’ve now left yourself time to change, rearrange or add things if needed. Build on the basics as you get closer, perhaps by adding greens from the outdoors.

•     Wrap some flat ribbon on your dining chairs (use metallic or holiday colors for a shimmer effect).

•    Decorate the chandelier above the table with garlands or bows.

•    Use some pretty holiday collectibles at each place. It’s a great conversation initiator.

•     Use pleasantly scented candles (make sure they’re safe) to dress the table and other serving areas in the room.

•    If you’ve located your beloved Christmas or Chanukah collectibles, put them in your dining room breakfront or on your server for all to enjoy. (It’s okay to remove some of your all year-round stuff so things don’t look cluttered).

•    Set the mood with holiday music and let it play softly in the background.

•    Most of all, try to leave time for yourself to get ready so that you can greet your company with a happy smile that tells them how much you want them to be there.

•    Don’t forget to enjoy yourself, even if things go a little awry. Remember, this holiday, this year, will never come again.

P.S. – If your home needs some new furnishings or accessories and you want to be sure you will have it in time, visit Uniquely Natalie, our beautiful quality consignment shop right in St. James for immediate delivery and a great new look for your home with amazing prices.  If you have items that others might enjoy and which you no longer consider part of your treasured possessions, consign them with us and give it a good home with someone else for the holidays.

How To Secretly Yet Successfully Motivate Your Child

Lauren Zitowsky is a Certified Teen Life Coach. In her practice at Teen Life Coach Inc., she arms your teens with the tools needed to overcome issues such as bullying, body image, divorce, school, relationships, heartache and peer pressure. Lauren can be reached at teenlifecoachlauren@gmail.com

Your child comes home with tears trickling down their face.  As your little one is screaming out in pain your heart  drops into the pit of your stomach. You are able to fight back your tears but are unable to stop those of your child. You have no idea what happened but you know one thing for sure. It won't happen again. Not to my child.

Unfortunately, the above scenario is all too common.  Kids go through rough times.  They all do. It is in these moments of darkness that their character is built.

When a child is in pain many parents will shower them with words of encouragement.  You may have used phrases such as: You are faster, stronger and smarter than your problems. There is nothing you can't handle. Hold your head up.  Tomorrow will be better. Although these words are nice to hear, they won't solve the problem.  Let's face it.  When you tell a child what to do or how to feel do they typically listen? The answer would be no.  So, let’s choose a different approach.

How do you do this? As a parent it is essential that you plant the seeds to your child's success. This should be done every single day. Now what do I mean by this.

Let's say your child is fearful they will fail their upcoming math test.  By planting the seeds you would ask them the following questions leading up to the exam.  After you pass your math test how would you like to celebrate OR How awesome are you going to feel when you pass your math test?!

As you plant these seeds to success you are laying the loving foundation that you believe in your child.  You are asking them to picture how they will feel after they accomplish a goal they never thought was attainable.  As you can see, the parent isn't nagging nor are they putting pressure on the child. They are simply asking positive questions that garner positive answers.  Reality is perception.  If we are constantly being told we can accomplish our goals we will quickly believe we can.

In the words of Confucius," he who says he can and he who says he can't are both right".  This just makes sense. Your child can fail their test as easily as they can pass it. The only thing getting in their way is themselves.  When you eliminate your child's fear of failing you are replacing it with the excitement of winning. Now get to work!  You have seeds to plant!.

Recapping The 2016 MLB Season

Anthony Caraturo is in his second year at Suffolk County Community College. It is his passion to write about sports and share his thoughts with people who enjoy reading. He would love to one day realize
his dream as a sports writer. acaraturo@gmail.com.
The year 2016 for the MLB was nothing short of a roller coaster. We saw teams like the Diamondbacks, Twins, Braves and Padres have miserable years yet again. We also saw teams like The Cubs, Nationals, and Dodgers excite and give fans around the league a taste of what great baseball could be.
The Nationals and Mets in the NL East battled it out for the top spot in the division and ultimately in the end, the Nationals grabbed the spot and the Mets grabbed the first wild card spot. The Nationals’ Daniel Murphy had an MVP caliber season losing the batting title by a point, while driving 25 balls over the fence and driving 104 runs across home plate. The Mets battled significant injuries all season. They lost David Wright, Lucas Duda, Neil Walker, and starting pitchers: deGrom, Matz, Harvey, and Wheeler for the season at one point or another. The Mets still won 87 games and finished the season going 27-13, which was the best record in the MLB over that stretch. They unfortunately were beaten by the Giants in the Wild Card game 3-0.
The Los Angeles Dodgers had a 91 game winning season, pitcher Clayton Kershaw for most of the summer and still found ways to win. That is what you have to do. Injuries occur but it is all about the next man up. If you can get those guys to step up you will eventually be in a great situation. Vin Scully, longtime Dodger announcer spent 67 seasons with the Dodgers which is the longest time a person has spent with a single professional sports team.
Chicago Cubs fans finally have a reason to be excited. Even though they have not won a World Series since 1908, the light could not be any brighter at the end of their tunnel. They have combined elite young hitting with fantastic pitching which translated into a 103 game winning season. Kris Bryant will probably go onto win the MVP after his 39 home run campaign. Kyle Hendricks finished with an era of 2.13, the lowest in the MLB. They beat the Giants in four games and rallied in the ninth inning in that game down 5-2 to clinch an NLCS berth for the second consecutive year.
The MLB regular season ended in a tragic way when the game lost a rising young star in Cuban born flamethrower Jose Fernandez. Fernandez broke into the MLB as a rookie at 20 years old. He touched all with his incredible story of facing a tough life in Cuba, which he tried to escape four times, eventually making it over on a boat (which was the same trip he saved his mother once she fell off the boat). He was 24 years old and we were truly witnessing what was the beginning of an incredible career. He finished the season 16-8 with 253 strikeouts. He will be missed by baseball fans everywhere and most importantly those close to him.

Halloween Costume Trends

Rachael Severino is an incoming 10th grade student at Sachem North High School in Sachem School District. This aspiring writer has a knack for the written word. She has penned short stories, poetry and is developing an impressive body of work.
It’s October, which means stores are stocked with Halloween costumes for all ages. While the stores currently have some excellent choices, you should get the best costume possible while the selections are still full.
With the recent movie Suicide Squad making a real splash, many girls may be interested in dressing up as Harley Quinn. Any Halloween shop is sure to have at least one version of this costume. Of course, you may prefer the old Harley Quinn look and can easily find her outfit online. A great couple’s costume would be Harley Quinn and the Joker or Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy.
With the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens at the end of last year and its arrival on many movie channels fairly recently, the Star Wars trend has skyrocketed. You can go classic, dressing as Luke, Leia, Han maybe even Darth Vader. Or you can go with the prequels, Padme, Obi-Wan, or Anakin. And now, you can go as Poe, Finn, Rey, or Kylo Ren. You can do couples costumes with any combination of these, depending on the pairing you like the best. You can even dress your pet as a loveable droid, old or new.
Another trend expected to be huge this year, and widely appreciated, is the pun costume. These can be DIY’s or purchased. A few minutes on Pinterest or Buzzfeed will give you several ‘punny’ ideas from which to choose.
With the explosion of Pokémon Go, expect to find more and more people dressing up as their favorite Pokémon or Pokémon trainers. Some people may ratchet it up a level, dressing as Poke Spots. An interesting and cute couples costume for this little subcategory is Ash and Pikachu.
In general, costumes haven’t really changed, but here are some classics that always look adorable on your youngest. Baby pumpkins or ghosts are simple and precious. For slightly older children, princesses, witches, pirates, or princes are always fan favorites. Light-up witch costumes are still a popular trend and enable your child to light up the streets while trick-or-treating.
If your teen doesn’t want to dress up and has taken door duty, offer up a witty T-shirt so they can join in on the festivities. Many T-shirts are sold with the words ‘costume’, ‘Halloween’ or ‘this is my costume’ printed on them. So while they may not being getting into full costume, they are still included.
For your fluffy companion, I suggest shopping sooner rather than later. Dog costumes sell out quickly. If you can grab a good costume early on, consider it a win. There are all sorts of options, ranging from the simple bumble bee to a Star Wars Bantha costume with sand people riding atop their backs.
No matter what you choose this year, find a costume that makes you happy, be safe, and get lots of treats. Happy Halloween!

Halloween Crafts For Grown Ups

Before throwing your bottle of Pino Grigio in the recycle bin consider revamping it into a cool Halloween decoration. You can make these adorable Halloween friends out of wine bottles.

The best way to remove the labels is to soak the bottles in a bucket filled with hot water, a cup of baking powder,  a tablespoon of dish soap, and a cup of white vinegar for 45 minutes. The label should come off with just a bit of scrubbing.

Materials Needed:
Wine bottles (clear glass works best)
Acrylic paint
Decoupage medium
Glitter
Sharpie pens
Orange felt
Flower
Ribbon
Raffia straw
Rubber bands

Scarecrow:
Apply two coats of a light beige paint to the bottle. Then cover with one coat of a sheer gold glitter paint.
Use a black sharpie to make simple face designs. Shapes such as hearts, triangles, and squiggly lines are the easiest to draw. Practice drawing the faces on paper beforehand if need be.

To make the hat take a rectangular piece of orange felt about 8×10 inches. Fold the longer part up 1 inch and hot glue it. Wrap the felt around the bottle. Secure with glue. Use a rubber band to gather the top of the hat and glue a flower on top.

To make the hair grab a handful of the raffia straw and use the rubber bands to make pigtails. Glue a small festive ribbon tied into a bow on each side. Hot glue the hair to the inside of the hat. Finish off by placing the hat on top of the wine bottle.

Monster:
Start by applying two coats of a green paint to the wine bottle then one coat of a green glitter paint, leaving the top of the bottle unpainted.

Apply a black paint to the top of the bottle, making small triangles around for the hair. When dry, paint a coat of clear decoupage on the black hair then sprinkle black glitter on the area. Follow with one more coat of the decoupage medium to seal it.
Use a sharpie to draw in the eyes, nose and mouth

Candy Corn:
Paint white, orange and yellow sections on the bottle from top to bottom.

When dry add a coat of decoupage to the white area then sprinkle with white glitter. Seal with another coat of decoupage medium. Do the same for the yellow. In the orange section draw the face with a black sharpie.

Your newly decorated wine bottles can be displayed alongside your freshly picked pumpkins and enhanced with a string of battery operated lights placed inside the bottles.

Happy Halloween!

The start of a new school year offers a prime time to research and plan college visits for the prospective college student.  College trip planning provides students and their parents the opportunity to learn a lesson in setting up a college visit itinerary. This is an educational experience that improves with each successive visit and is an important part of the college search process. Prior to the planning stage, a fair assessment of the schools to visit should be agreed upon to make the ultimate journey productive. Once the preliminary college list has been established and suitable matches are identified, college visits should be arranged efficiently by geographic regions so that multiple schools may be viewed consecutively.
Preparing for each college visit includes thorough research to build a frame of reference so that students can survey schools with a critical eye.  Valuable steps include reviewing each school’s website, taking the virtual tour, surveying college guide books, learning about program offerings and the specific departments that peak your student’s interest. These simple steps promote efficient planning and aid in creating a more educated framework for assessing schools. Scheduling in advance is important, along with taking the campus tour and information sessions. While in the Admissions Office, fill out personal information and contact cards. Introduce yourself to your region’s admissions officer. These practical steps build your demonstrated interest in a school and help to identify an authentic desire to attend.
Once completed, record each visit within a personal college visit journal that might include both a narrative and a data chart of vital facts and impressions. With each contribution, a reassessment can take place to gauge the relative merits of each school. As time passes, the college visit journal will help rekindle impressions and contribute to the decision making process. Finally, follow-up with a potential decision maker, such as your regional admissions officer. An email with a genuine inquiry and a comment about your recent visit and interest in the school sets a positive tone.

College Trip Planning Recap:

• Initiate college visits once you have established a well-thought out student preference profile. This self-assessment and interest inventory will provide a solid foundation from which to investigate schools.

• Prepare by reviewing school websites, take virtual tours, survey college guide books, learn about program offerings and specific departments that peak student’s interest.

• Participate in all of the admissions offerings, including an information session, campus tour, interview, open house, personal data survey, website email sign-up, etc. Introduce yourself to the admissions officer for your region. Demonstrated interest in a school helps to separate your student’s application from the competition.

• Seek to cluster visits with other targeted colleges in a geographic region.

• Follow-up with a potential decision maker, such as your regional admissions officer. An email with an authentic inquiry and a comment about your recent visit and interest in the school sets a positive tone.

• Make both an anecdotal and data record of each college visit for future reference. A College Visit Journal will help rekindle impressions and contribute to the decision making process.

Loving Halloween on Long Island

Tammy Severino is the President of RPC Development, a business and development consulting firm for local businesses and not-for-profit organizations. She has more than 20 years of experience in writing, from business writing to journalism to creative writing, as well as in event planning for corporations, not-for-profit organizations and private clients.  In her spare time, this fashionista follows and writes about fashion, travel, and other lifestyle topics.

Halloween is one of the few days each year where, even as an adult, you get to have pure fun – almost Disney-like fun. We, on Long Island, are fortunate to have such a wide array of places to visit for some scary, wild or friendly Halloween fun.
If you have wee ones dressing up for tricks and treats (I imagine more treats than tricks), you are probably looking for some good, family-friendly Halloween fun.   We love Lewin Farms in Wading River for pumpkin picking and other u-pick ‘em fruit and vegetable options throughout the year.
On the other end of the Island – over in N. Patchogue, head to Woodside Nursery, for the haunted tunnel, the Octobercation Trail, Gold Mining, Scarecrow Making, Face Painting and other family fall fun. Drive a little further east and arrive at the Long Island Aquarium. There you will find Bats, Barnacles & Broomsticks.  Children will enjoy a safe trick-or-treat experience as they meander through the Aquarium. The Unearthing Atlantis Dig will be transformed into a “Pirate’s Nightmare Haunted House” and a Costume Parade will cap off an afternoon of crafts and games, author readings, face painting, the Live-brary team and more. Later that night you can return to the aquarium for the annual Masquerade Ball for an evening of costumed fun and fare. Head north to Old Westbury Gardens for The RISE (Rise of the Jack O’Lanterns), a walking trail filled with over 5,000 hand-carved illuminated Jack O'Lanterns designed by professional artists and sculptors! The Rise of the Jack O’Lanterns is one of the few events that combines the theme of the season with artistic beauty. It is truly a spectacular site that can be enjoyed by people of all ages.
If you prefer Halloween’s dark and spooky side, Huntington Station’s new Restless Souls Haunted House Complex may be just the place for you. You can visit 3 Haunted Attractions: The Shack of Screams, The Dark Colony Haunted Trail, and Dr. Bane's Klownitorium in 3D. The Phantom Plaza will offer up photo ops and musical entertainment.
NYZ Apocalypse in Deer Park is a fan favorite each year for some of the best scaring around.  The Yaphank Trail of Terror, considered one of Long Island’s scariest Halloween trails, will give you just the right fright. Bayville’s Scream Park, a terrifying Halloween theme park, will frighten even the toughest in your crowd. Now, with ‘not so scary’ days for kids, it offers Halloween fear factor at all levels.
Are you a fan of the escape room craze? Challenge Escape Rooms is a uniquely fun and interactive game that tests your wits, communication skills and teamwork abilities. For the Halloween season, the escape challenges take on a more sinister twist with Killer Countdown. Take a quick trip to Franklin Square for this harrowing Halloween experience.
One additional activity you can do this time of year is drive through neighborhoods to see the wondrous displays neighbors all around the region have in place for the holiday.  With some warm drinks in travel mugs you can ride around on a clear evening in search of your personal favorites. Even our family gets in on the action….my very own sister and brother-in-law have one of the best displays in Nassau County….search for the headless horseman in your travels.
As you choose the fun that is the best fit for you and yours, please know I wish you great fun and happy haunting!
