Jungle Jack Hanna got his first job when he was eleven working for his family veterinarian in Knoxville, Tennessee. He later went on to Muskingum College in New Concord, Ohio where he met his wife, Suzi Egli. They were married in 1968 and soon after opened a pet shop. Then, in 1973, Jack received an offer to direct a small zoo in Sanford, Florida. Jack continued there until 1975. In 1978, after having to take a short break from the animal world, he answered an ad for a zoo director in Columbus, Ohio. Jack says, "When I first started at the Columbus Zoo, attendance was low and the animal habitats were outdated. My top priority was to increase attendance by offering educational and entertaining events". Jack eventually helped turn the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium into one of the best in the world.
In 1983 Jack made his first TV appearance on Good Morning America and two years later visited The Late Show with David Letterman. After that, the Columbus Zoo became known nationwide and Jack Hanna got his own series of TV shows that now include, Wild Countdown and Into the Wild. Jack has also written many books. His most recent is titled 'Jack Hanna’s Big Book of Why'. The book answers all the common questions kids have about animals that parents tend not to have the answer to. It's a great book that everyone can enjoy and learn from.
I recently had an amazing opportunity to interview Jack Hanna. He told me something I will never forget, “Touch the Heart to Teach the Mind.” After the interview, I was lucky enough to see some of the amazing animals Jack brought with him. I even had a chance to play with some baby cheetahs. I also saw the penguin they used to make the movie Happy Feet 2. Jack Hanna is great on TV and even better in-person, with a heart that's bigger than the world he's traveled.
