The summer has officially ended with the upcoming start of the school year and it’s back to the old routine.  It’s also back to looking inward – toward your home and yourself.  Perhaps it’s time to look at what’s happened during the summer while you’ve been outdoors vacationing, and having some well-deserved fun. Now it’s time to get your house back in shape for the fall. I mean (anything else is entirely up to you, but one usually follows the other).
So, let’s examine that annoying word – “Clutter” – you know, that thing that happens when your stuff gets out of control. Our kids and family should start the new fall term right, so keeping your house clutter free and organized will help everyone focus. It also helps us find more time to do the things that are enjoyable.
Here are some tips to declutter and some tips to help you stay that way.
    • Designate a block of time to tackle the clutter.
    • Have several boxes or bags labeled to KEEP FOR CHARITY/ TO THROW AWAY.
    • Don’t attack the entire house at once!
    • Start with one small area at a time and work your way around a room.
    • If you are replacing furniture, look to functionality and beauty.
    • Bins and boxes are a great way to increase your storage but watch out for unnecessary clutter from these items and don’t use them as an excuse to save everything!
    • Open your mail at the garbage pail or recycling bin.
    • To avoid impulse buys:  DO YOUR HOMEWORK before you go shopping and make a list.
    • Set the dining room table so it won’t be a drop off point for clutter.
    • Clear off kitchen counters before you leave.
    • Make your bed every day.
    • Establish a plan for clean-up and maintenance.
    • Give everyone in the family responsibility.
    • Do a little every day.
